Single-season rushing records were shattered at Agoura and Camarillo highs, two surprise contenders in the Marmonte League this season.

For Agoura, which finished fourth and made the playoffs as the Division III at-large team, senior Scott Mitchell rushed for 1,717 yards, breaking the school record of 1,554 yards set by Dan Hoffman in 1984.

Camarillo’s Fahali Campbell not only broke the school’s single-season rushing mark while leading the Scorpions into Friday’s second-round game against Baldwin Park, he became the first player in Ventura County history to rush for more than 2,000 yards.

Passing: Newbury Park junior Keith Smith, the state’s leading passer for much of the season, finished with 3,318 yards. Smith’s favorite targets, Jason Toohey and Leodes Van Buren, finished with 80 and 79 receptions, respectively. Toohey and Van Buren ranked first and second among state receiving leaders at the end of the regular season.

Saugus quarterback Bobby Cowan finished his career as the Centurions’ leader in yards passing (3,808) and touchdowns (26).

Rushing: Sophomore running back Bryan Wilkins of Littlerock was the only 1,000-yard rusher in the Golden League this season. Wilkins rushed for 1,279 yards and 14 touchdowns in 195 carries.

Chaminade’s Justin Giovannettone finished the season with 1,474 yards in 226 carries and scored 25 touchdowns. Giovannettone, the Mission League MVP, also caught 37 passes for 387 yards. . . .

Jonathan Russaw’s streaks of two consecutive 200-yard games and seven consecutive 100-yard games ended with a thud in Kilpatrick’s first-round playoff loss to Brethren. Russaw gained five yards.

Montclair Prep’s Eliel Swinton is now fourth on the Southern Section all-time rushing list. Swinton, who gained 153 yards last week against Murrieta Valley, has 5,258. He is 139 behind Ray Pallares (Valencia, 1983-85).
