Laguna Beach (21-2) trailed, 12-7, in the first game, but the Artists came back to tie it, allowing one more point before Christy Collisson and Anne Swayne blocked Mandy Bradford for game point.

Both teams’ sloppy play was marked by occasional crisp hits from Wacholder or North’s Judy Rexroth, who finished with 11 kills.

North had 15 errors in the second game and 10 in the third. Wacholder had seven kills in the third game for Laguna Beach.

“Both teams are coming (off) defeats in sectional matches,” Laguna Beach Coach Michael Soylular said. “There was a momentum shift, mentally and fundamentally. We were kind of sluggish and kind of apprehensive, but after the first game I think we regained our composure.”
