An off-duty Huntington Beach police officer was involved in an apparent accidental shooting in his home Wednesday morning that left his twin brother seriously wounded.

Jonathon Haught, 23, was examining a 12-gauge shotgun with his brother, Jason Haught, in his home in the 14000 block of Pacific Street. The gun fired and struck Jason in the right side, Huntington Beach Lt. Ed McErlain said.

Jason Haught, also of Westminster, was taken to UCI Medical Center in Orange where he underwent surgery for his wounds. He is listed in serious but stable condition.

The officer, who has been on the Huntington Beach force for 10 months, immediately reported the 11:35 a.m. incident to the Westminster Police Department, and an investigation is underway, McErlain said.

The gun belonged to the officer, McErlain said.

Police said they did not know exactly how many pellets struck Jason Haught but at least two were recovered at the scene.
