Orlin Norris Defends His Title

Orlin Norris of San Diego on Wednesday defended his North American Boxing Federation cruiserweight championship by stopping David Sewell at 1:42 of the fifth round in a scheduled 12-rounder at the Riviera Hotel in Las Vegas.

Norris, 34-3 with 18 knockouts, ended the one-sided bout by knocking down Sewell, 13-1 with seven knockouts, three times in the fifth.

Norris, 192, dropped Sewell, 186, for the first time in the fifth with a right uppercut to the chin. The second knockdown was a left hook to the head while the final knockdown came with a flurry of blows to the head as Sewell was trapped in a neutral corner.

Norris also knocked down Sewell in the fourth with a right uppercut to the jaw. Norris was leading by three points, 39-36, on all three judges’ scorecards through four rounds.

Norris has won 12 of his past 13 fights and is 5-0 as a cruiserweight. It was his second defense of the title he won in March.

Norris was the NABF heavyweight champ from 1987 to 1991, weighing as much as 227 pounds two years ago.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

San Diego State opened its season with an exhibition victory over the Belgian national team, 62-51, at SDSU’s Peterson Gym.

Michelle Suman led SDSU with 17 points, teammate Felisha Wright added 14. Christina Murguia scored 11 points and led the Aztecs with 11 rebounds.

Ilse Nuytens led Belgium with 12 points and five rebounds, teammate Ann Van Doren added nine points and eight rebounds.
