One suspect was killed and two others seriously wounded in three shootings involving Los Angeles police officers this weekend, authorities said.

Weapons were recovered from the suspects in all three confrontations, which occurred during a five-hour stretch between Friday night and Saturday morning, said Detective Michael Schneider. No officers were injured.

In the first incident, Newton Division officers responding to a report of a man with a gun shortly before midnight Friday observed three men in an alley near 32nd Street and Central Avenue. Two fled, Schneider said, but a third began walking toward the officers.

The officers saw a handgun in the man’s waistband and ordered him to raise his hands. Instead, the man allegedly began to grab the gun. One officer fired two rounds from his service revolver, striking Juan Vega, 23, in the chest and lower back.

Vega was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics. A .38-caliber revolver was found in his waistband, Schneider said.

Two hours later, Southwest Division officers were flagged down by a large group of people near a bar in the 4700 block of West Adams Boulevard and told that a man with a gun had just left the area. Officers stopped Javier Billalobos, 32, and ordered him to raise his hands and turn away from them, Schneider said.

As he did so, the officers saw a 9-millimeter pistol in the man’s rear waistband. Billalobos allegedly reached for the weapon. One officer fired a single shot, Schneider said. Billalobos was struck in the lower back and taken to UCLA Medical Center in critical condition.

At about 4:30 a.m. Saturday, officers in the Rampart Division heard shots fired near 8th and Alvarado streets. As they drove around the block, they saw a man run from an alley in front of their patrol car. While they questioned Mario Chilas, 19, a second man came running from the alley, armed with a 9-millimeter assault rifle, Schneider said.

The man allegedly pointed the rifle at officers, who fired several shots, striking Luis Garcia, 18. He was taken in serious condition with multiple gunshot wounds to County-USC Medical Center.

A third man, armed with an AK-47 and .32-caliber pistol, also came from the alley, Schneider said. He allegedly pointed the assault rifle at the officers, who fired several shots but missed the suspect, identified as Joel Cortez, 18. All three suspects were booked for attempted murder in connection with an earlier shooting that left two people slightly wounded in the 700 block of Alvarado.
