ROUNDUP : Valley Stays Unbeaten in Women’s Basketball

Valley College made an early bid to move up in the women’s state basketball rankings with a 69-56 nonconference victory over seventh-ranked Cerritos on Saturday at Valley.

Valley (4-0), ranked 10th in the state by Cal-Hi Sports, enjoyed a double-figure lead almost the entire second half. The game was won at the free-throw line where the Monarchs made 18 of 23.

Rosa Mendez led Valley with 16 points. Teammate Michelle Cabaldon contributed 12 points, and Nicole Baynes and Amy Horst added 11 and 10 points.

In other women’s basketball games:

Chaffey 70, Moorpark 64--The Raiders led, 61-58, with less than two minutes left, but Chaffey (2-3) scored the next 12 points to win a nonconference game at Moorpark.

The Raiders committed 11 turnovers in the first half and trailed, 28-22, at halftime. However, sophomores Tamara Pacheco and guard Lori Church led a second-half surge for the Raiders (3-3), who were playing their home opener.

Pacheco, a forward, finished with 21 points and nine rebounds, and Church added 19 points.

Southwestern 81, Antelope Valley 74 (2 OTs)--Antelope Valley led with 12 seconds left in the first overtime but turned the ball over, losing the lead and eventually the game at home.

Southwestern took a quick lead in the second overtime and made six of nine free throws after the Marauders were forced to foul.

Antelope Valley forward Aimee Grimes forced overtime by sinking two free throws with two seconds left in regulation. Grimes finished with 12 points and 16 rebounds.

Sasha Garrison paced the Marauders with 23 points and 10 rebounds. Christi Huff added 19 points, and Bernice Atkinson came off the bench to score 14.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

Cal Lutheran 88, UC Santa Cruz 64--Jared Byrne scored 19 points on nine-for-13 shooting from the field to lead host Cal Lutheran.

Forward Damon Ridley (14 points, nine rebounds), reserve Derrick Clark (11 points) and guard Dave Ulloa (10 points) also scored in double figures for Cal Lutheran (3-1).

Azusa Pacific 101, The Master’s 74--Bob Terry and Ernie Peters each scored 20 points to lead the Cougars (3-0) to a nonconference rout at The Master’s.

Andy Thompson led the Mustangs (2-2) with 18 points, and Rusty Clark added 13 points and 12 rebounds.

HIGH SCHOOL WRESTLING

Harvard-Westlake tournament--Harvard dominated at the heavier weights and won the round-robin event at Harvard.

Harvard’s Cameron Reilly (145 pounds), Zach Lutsky (152), Tim Triche (160), Greg Brown (171), Germain DeMartinis (189) and Josh Minuto (heavyweight) won their classes by going undefeated.
