PAVEMENT STRETCH: Santa Ana Heights residents argue that with a longer runway at John Wayne Airport, jets could start their takeoffs closer to the San Diego Freeway, reducing noise over the tops of their homes. County officials are taking a closer look. They’re proposing a $300,000 feasibility study to lengthen the runway by 750 feet on the north end, and another 1,000 feet on the south end, for emergency stops only. . . . Officials also say residents need not fear: A longer runway won’t open the door for larger jets at JWA.
