In an awards ceremony at the College Football Hall of Fame at Kings Mills, Ohio, Garrison Hearst of the University of Georgia won the Doak Walker Award as the nation’s top collegiate running back. Gino Torretta of Miami won the Davey O’Brien Award as the top quarterback and received the Maxwell Award as the outstanding player in college football. Will Shields of Nebraska won the Outland Trophy as the nation’s best interior lineman, and Deon Figures of Colorado, from Compton and Serra High, won the Jim Thorpe Award as the best college defensive back. Miami’s Dennis Erickson was honored as coach of the year.
