Warriors’ forward Sherise Sandoz started the season by scoring 72 points and grabbing 55 rebounds in the first three games as Pius X of Downey won the consolation championship of the Downey Tournament. In the opening game, Sandoz had 27 points and 15 rebounds as the Warriors lost to Millikan, 56-50. The team bounced back behind Sandoz’s 20 points and 15 rebounds to defeat Montebello, 52-43, in the consolation semifinal game. In the consolation championship, Sandoz recorded 25 points and 25 rebounds to lead the Warriors to a 51-37 victory over El Rancho.

Other top prep performers:

Aisha Veasley, a forward for Valley Christian High of Cerritos, led her basketball team to a second-place finish in the Hacienda Heights Wilson Tournament with 38 points, 35 rebounds and 10 steals.

Shanika Porter of Paramount High scored 35 points and pulled down 12 rebounds as the Pirates defeated Mayfair, 72-47, in their season opener.
