The Sailors should do better then their last-place finish of a year ago. Their junior varsity team won the league championship, and many of those players will be asked to contribute, especially early on. Tift and McAnlis, the only returning starters, were unavailable when practice began. Tift was the tailback on the football team, which qualified for the playoffs. McAnlis, a second-team all-league pick, was out because of a knee injury. He is expected to miss the first few games. Serven does have Vallely, the son of former UCLA star John Vallely. He is a deadly shooter and has one year of varsity experience behind him. He will be expected to score more this season. Eadie was the MVP of the junior varsity team and will be counted on up front. “He is one of the hardest workers we have ever had,” Serven said. “He plays much bigger than 6-2.” Tayyar is the key. A year ago, he was on the freshman team and now is being asked to take over at point guard. He will undoubtedly make mistakes early. The faster he develops, the faster the Sailors will improve. “I know we’re inexperienced, and we don’t have much size, but I’m optimistic about this team,” Serven said. “It’s a group of kids that are easy to coach.”
