COLLEGE BASKETBALL NATIONAL ROUNDUP : Dehere, Hurley Lead Seton Hall Past Iona

Seton Hall was playing without starting point guard Bryan Caver, but Terry Dehere and Danny Hurley ran the backcourt with little trouble and the No. 7-ranked Pirates beat Iona, 75-61, Thursday night at White Plains, N.Y.

Dehere, after a slow start, finished with 18 points and Hurley, younger brother of Duke’s Bobby Hurley, had a career-high 16 in helping Seton Hall to a 6-1 record.

Dehere, who came into the game averaging 24.5 points, had only two at halftime as the Pirates led, 40-36. Hurley had nine of his points in the first half as Dehere made only one of five shots.

Iona (1-3) cut the deficit to 53-48 with 12:50 to play. But Dehere scored the next 10 points for Seton Hall, the first six on his first three-pointers of the night.

Arturas Karnishovas added 15 points and nine rebounds for Seton Hall.

Caver sprained his left ankle in practice on Tuesday night and could be out as long as two weeks.

No. 11 Oklahoma 92, South Carolina 76--The Sooner defense forced 35 turnovers at Norman, Okla.

The Gamecocks (1-4) shot 52% and trailed, 85-74, with 2:22 to play before Oklahoma (4-0) sealed the victory on Bryatt Vann’s three-pointer with 1:45 to play.

The Sooners shot only 38%.

Vann paced Oklahoma with 25 points.

No. 25 Nebraska 100, Creighton 83--Eric Piatkowski scored 21 points as the Cornhuskers used scoring runs at the start of each half to defeat Creighton at Lincoln, Neb.

Piatkowski scored nine of his points in the first five minutes as Nebraska (4-0) opened a 12-6 lead. The Cornhuskers eventually increased the advantage to 32-17.

Creighton (0-3) cut the deficit to 42-33 at halftime, but center Bruce Chubick, who started in place of injured Derrick Chandler, triggered the second-half run, scoring six of Nebraska’s first 11 points as the Huskers led, 53-38, with 17:12 remaining.

OTHER GAMES

Fordham (2-1) broke a 23-game losing streak to St. John’s (3-2) with a 60-55 victory, the Rams’ first over the Redmen since Feb. 13, 1971. It was Fordham’s first victory over St. John’s at the Rose Hill Gymnasium in New York since the 1964-65 season. Digger Phelps coached the Rams when they won in 1971. . . . Connecticut (3-1) got 13 points from Brian Fair and 12 apiece from Scott Burrell and Donyell Marshall, and defeated Yale, 65-38, at the Hartford Civic Center. The Elis are 1-4.

Bill Curley scored 20 points and had eight rebounds to lead Boston College (2-1) to a 72-54 victory over Fairleigh Dickinson (1-2) at Newton, Mass. . . . Montana (3-2) got 17 points from sophomore guard Jeremy Lake in a 55-51 victory over San Jose State (2-2) in a nonconference game at Montana.

Evers Burns and Kevin McLinton scored 24 and 22 points, respectively, as Maryland (3-1) defeated American University (2-2) at College Park, Md. . . . Keith Balzer scored a career-high 26 points to lead San Diego State (2-2) to a 106-91 victory over Westmont (4-3) at San Diego. . . . Sophomore Kareem Townes had 31 points as La Salle (2-1) defeated James Madison, 83-70, at Philadelphia. James Madison is 3-1.
