The wreckage of a San Diego-based Navy jet that crashed south of here was found Thursday evening, but a search continued for the pilot, authorities said.

The F-16 fighter was reported missing from radar contact in Salt Lake City at 1:16 p.m. MST. The crash site, in a field about 7 1/2 miles southwest of the Twin Falls-Sun Valley Regional Airport, was confirmed about 6 p.m., said Staff Sgt. John Norgren, a Mountain Home Air Force Base spokesman.

Norgren said the pilot was not with the wreckage, but footprints led away from the area and a search was underway. The 366th Wing at Mountain Home was coordinating the search-and-rescue effort, and the Idaho Air National Guard reportedly was assisting with infrared night-vision equipment.

The pilot was the only person aboard the F-16. He was not identified.

The Falcon fighter was assigned to Fighter Squadron 126 at Miramar Naval Air Station in San Diego.
