HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP : Hot Glendale Burns Wilson on Tran Layup With 5 Seconds Left

Hai Tran scored on a layup off a pass from David Sofro with five seconds remaining to give Glendale High a 46-45 non-league victory over visiting Long Beach Wilson on Friday, the Dynamiters’ fifth win in their past six games.

Tran, Glendale’s point guard, finished with a team-high 15 points, six steals and six assists. Glendale (6-3) connected on only 18 of 58 field-goal attempts, but the Dynamiters overcame a 43-39 deficit in the closing minutes and Long Beach Wilson’s last attempt to win the game fell short when a 25-foot shot bounced off the rim.

Sofro and Edwin Bonilla each finished with 10 points for Glendale, which led at halftime, 25-23.

In other boys’ basketball games:

Thousand Oaks 47, Westlake 41--The Warriors nearly pulled off an upset against the visiting Lancers in a Marmonte League opener.

Bolstered by a 16-2 third-quarter run, Thousand Oaks (7-1) erased a 27-13 Westlake advantage to pull even after three quarters. Jason Hartman scored seven of his 13 points in the third quarter and Peter Lauer added 11 of his game-high 18 points in the second half for Thousand Oaks.

Jason Bedell led Westlake (2-5) with 16 points.

Westlake held Thousand Oaks’ twin forwards, Paul and Nick Foster, to 10 and three points.

Notre Dame 68, Esquimalt 37--Notre Dame advanced to the semifinals of the La Canada tournament with an easy win. Senior swingman Monte Marcaccini scored only 10 points but had 11 rebounds.

Notre Dame will play San Fernando today at 6:30.

San Fernando 62, El Rancho 60--Junior guard Javier Ramos made a three-point basket with 15 seconds remaining to give San Fernando the victory in a quarterfinal of the La Canada tournament.

Ramos finished with 18 points. Jerome Elliott led San Fernando with 21 points.

Birmingham 61, Bravo Medical Magnet 35--Greg Whiteside and Raffi Kassabian each scored 18 points for Birmingham in Hamilton tournament pool play.

The Braves (7-2) will play University in the championship game.

University 51, Kennedy 46--Senior guard Joe Wyatt scored a game-high 27 points, but it was not enough as the Cougars’ second-half comeback fell short in Hamilton tournament pool play.

Kennedy (4-6, 2-1 in the tournament) scored only seven points in the first half and trailed by 20 at the break. The Golden Cougar press worked effectively in the third quarter and enabled Kennedy to make a game of it. Keith Brydon and Jermon Cooks each added six points for Kennedy.

Nordhoff 67, Fillmore 36--Junior swingman Mark Sebek had 17 points and eight rebounds, and teammates Brad Shropshire and Sonny Frierdich each added 11 points as Nordhoff won the nonleague game at home.

Nordhoff (5-3) effectively used a man-to-man defense while building a 34-19 halftime lead. Archie Jackson added eight rebounds for Nordhoff and Andy Torres led Fillmore with 13 points.

Palmdale 65, Highland 55--Ty Gaines scored 18 points for the visiting Falcons (5-4, 3-0 in league play) in a Golden League game.

Maurice Wright added 14 points and Al Lairson 10. Lee Gilbreau led Highland (5-1, 1-1) with 18 points and Brian Burleson had 12.

Moorpark 57, Oak Park 51--The visiting Eagles cut the Moorpark lead to 52-50 with two minutes remaining, but the Musketeers made five of six free throws down the stretch to seal the nonleague win.

Jeff Barry led the Musketeers with 15 points and 12 rebounds, and Richard Hernandez had nine points and six steals. Damian Delfino led Oak Park with 16 points.

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL

Village Christian 43, Immaculate Heart 31--Freshman forward Lindy James scored a game-high 15 points to lead Village Christian (6-2) to the championship of the Campbell Hall tournament. James, who scored 53 points in three games, was selected the tournament’s most valuable player.

Point guard Jeanne Beauchamp, an all-tournament selection, scored 14 points.

Crossroads 45, Harvard-Westlake 38--Sophomore guard Sherrise Smith had 20 points for visiting Crossroads (4-3) in a nonleague win.

Bell-Jeff 59, Flintridge Sacred Heart 29--Lori Talley scored 19 points and had 11 assists for Bell-Jeff in a semifinal of the Burroughs-Bell-Jeff tournament.

Burbank 60, Oxnard 33--Michele Rumfola had 12 points, 17 rebounds, six steals and five assists for Burbank in a second-round game at the Simi Valley tournament. Jocelyn Ferialdi added 15 points for Burbank (6-1).

BOYS’ SOCCER

Agoura 2, Calabasas 1--Charger forward Ilad Goren scored on a head shot with 10 minutes to play to give visiting Agoura (3-1) the nonleague win.

Agoura opened the scoring when midfielder Brennan Baim scored in the first two minutes, assisted by Matt Polkow. Calabasas (6-3-1) tied the score on Shayne Ferber’s goal later in the first half.

Saugus 4, Santa Paula 2--Senior striker Alex Montero helped the Centurions (3-0-1) overcome a 1-0 halftime deficit with three second-half goals in a nonleague game at Santa Paula. Saugus goalkeeper Joe Bonfiglio recorded 12 saves and teammate Charlie Steiner added a penalty-kick goal.

Buena 1, Newbury Park 1--The host Panthers ended Buena’s five-game winning streak in a non-league game. Matt Prinz scored on a penalty kick in the first half for the Bulldogs (5-0-1).
