A Garden Grove police officer suffered a slight neck wound early Saturday morning in an exchange of gunfire with two men near the intersection of McFadden Avenue and Sullivan Street, police reported.

The wounded officer was treated at a local hospital and released.

The gunmen fled after firing at police. One of them, a 17-year-old male Santa Ana resident, was wounded when the unidentified Garden Grove officer and a partner, who were sitting in an unmarked surveillance vehicle, returned fire, according to Santa Ana Police Sgt. Roger Scharf.

Shortly after the shooting, which occurred at 1:42 a.m., Artemio P. Aleman, 18, of Santa Ana, brought his companion, the 17-year-old, to a Santa Ana hospital for treatment of a gunshot wound in the lower back. The 17-year-old was not identified because he is a juvenile.

Santa Ana police detained both of them for questioning and later arrested them on suspicion of attempted murder, Lt. Earl Porter said.

Police did not release the names of the two Garden Grove officers. The officers were part of a joint investigation with the Santa Ana police, which officials said had concluded.

Police in both cities declined to specify what type of investigation was being conducted.
