COMMUNITY COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Shelton Gets 31 Points, 20 Rebounds to Lead Cypress Past Golden West

Robbie Shelton’s career night helped Cypress beat Golden West, 79-72, in the third-place game of the Bill Taormina Tournament Saturday at Cypress College.

Shelton, a 6-foot-7 sophomore forward, had 31 points and 20 rebounds, both career highs, for the Chargers (12-4).

Shelton, from Western High, made 13 of 16 from the field and split his rebounds, 10 at each end.

The teams were tied, 34-34, at halftime, then Shelton and Golden West’s Josh Lewis dominated the second half, each scoring 19.

Lewis finished with a team-high 23 for Golden West (5-9). The Rustlers trailed by as many as nine in the second half but rallied. Golden West got as close as one, 69-68, on two free throws by Dave Dunham (15 points) with about three minutes left.

Shelton made one of two free throws with 2:44 left to give Cypress a 70-68 lead.

The Chargers went ahead, 73-68, on a three-pointer by Brett Evans with 1:14 left. Evans had looked to pass, but when the Golden West defense relaxed away from him, he took the open shot.

Garry Gibbs finished with 15 points for Cypress.

Long Beach won the title, beating Oxnard, 90-81. College of the Canyons beat Victory Valley, 71-66, for the consolation title.
