Nordhoff’s Sawyer, Glass Honored as Volleyball Player, Coach of Year

Nordhoff High continued to add to its collection of postseason awards in girls’ volleyball with senior Sami Sawyer and Coach Cheryl Glass earning top honors in Southern Section Division IV.

Sawyer, a 5-foot-10 setter-middle blocker, was named player of the year and Glass was selected as coach of the year after a season in which the Rangers went 24-3 and won the state and Division IV titles.

Five other Nordhoff players earned All-Southern Section honors in balloting by coaches. Seniors Alison Nofrey, Allison Kerr and Sarah Wright made the first team, and sophomores Jami Sawyer and Julie Sandefur earned second-team recognition. Amy Gusick of La Reina also made the second team.

Twelve other area players earned All-Southern Section honors.

In Division I, Gretchen Gulbranson and Tricia Tuley of Thousand Oaks and Agoura’s Tracy Heflin were second-team selections. Lindsay Powers of Harvard- Westlake was a Division II first-team pick.

Saugus, which advanced to the Division III semifinals for the first time, had two players receive awards. Lindsay Estes was a first-team honoree and Kezban Yagmir made the second team. Susan Brondell of Canyon and Dionne Nash of Quartz Hill won second-team recognition.

Three players from the L.A. Baptist team that reached the Southern Section final were honored in Division V. Sarah Rameson made the first team, and Erika Koss and Kim Rehwald were named to the second team. Lisa Stark of First Lutheran was named to the Division VI first team.
