Eric Montross celebrated a homecoming, helping North Carolina Coach Dean Smith to a milestone victory Sunday as the No. 5-ranked Tar Heels defeated Butler, 103-56, at Indianapolis.

George Lynch scored 18 points, and Montross, an Indianapolis native, added 13 as Smith won his 746th game, tying his former coach, Phog Allen of Kansas, for fourth place on the all-time list.

“I don’t deal with that,” Smith said. “I’ve been fortunate to have so many great athletes. I’ve never gotten into coaches’ numbers.”

North Carolina (6-0) took a 17-4 lead in the game’s opening six minutes en route to a 50-26 halftime advantage. Butler (1-4) was never closer in the second half.

Montross scored six consecutive points during the Tar Heels’ early run, all on dunks over the smaller Bulldogs. The 7-footer added seven rebounds and a blocked shot in 26 minutes.

Butler played only two players 6-8 or taller for any length of time, while Smith had the luxury of shuttling in six in that range, three of them 7-footers.

“I thought that Carolina was what we had seen in the previous five games,” Butler Coach Barry Collier said. “They’re big--they keep coming in waves. Our guys battled, but we were battling below the rim.

North Carolina forced 26 turnovers, 16 in the first half.

No. 7 Seton Hall 81, Fairleigh Dickinson 61--John Leahy made two three-point baskets during a 19-4 first-half run to lead the Pirates at East Rutherford, N.J.

Seton Hall (8-1) has won five games in a row. Fairleigh Dickinson (1-4) suffered its third consecutive loss and first in seven games at the Brendan Byrne Arena.

No. 8 Iowa 101, American University of Puerto Rico 47--Five Hawkeye players scored more than 10 points in an easy victory in the first round of the San Juan Shootout.

It was American’s first game against a Division I opponent since last year’s tournament, when the Eagles lost to Iowa State.

Iowa (6-0) was in total control of the much-smaller American University (6-1) team from the outset.

No. 10 Florida State 91, Temple 80--Derrick Carroll scored 11 of his 20 points in overtime to lead the Seminoles, who rallied from a 12-point deficit in the second half for the victory at Orlando, Fla.

No. 25 California 80, Santa Clara 73--The Golden Bears overcame a three-point deficit for the victory at Santa Clara.

Jerod Haase scored 21 points, and Jason Kidd and Lamond Murray each had 17 for Cal, which is 4-0 for the first time since the 1967-68 season.

Santa Clara (4-3), picked to finish near the bottom of the West Coast Conference, led most of the first half and had a 38-35 lead at halftime.

Dunne’s tip-in at 3:37 drew the Broncos to within 70-69, but Santa Clara then went 2:51 without scoring, and Cal moved to a 78-69 lead that ensured the victory.
