Countywide : Armories to Open During Holidays

Share

For the first time in several years, people without a home will be able to spend Christmas and New Year’s Eve in Orange County’s two armories.

Officials announced Wednesday that the armories in Santa Ana and Fullerton will accept homeless people no matter how warm the weather gets.

In past years, the armories have closed down on Christmas and New Year’s if the temperature rose above 40 degrees, or 50 degrees if it was raining.

The change in policy was made by Shelter for the Homeless, a nonprofit group that began operating the armories for the county earlier this year.

Jim Miller, the group’s executive director, said he hopes to keep the doors open through March as long as the weather doesn’t get too warm.

“We want to keep them open as long as possible,” he said.

The armories are at 612 E. Warner Ave. in Santa Ana and 400 S. Brookhurst St. in Fullerton.
