SPORTSCOPE / MITCH POLIN : Two Toro Women’s Soccer Players Selected as Division II All-Americans

Two players from the Cal State Dominguez Hills women’s soccer team, seniors Amy Rubin and Jennifer Grasso, have been named to the National Soccer Coaches Assn. of America NCAA Division II All-America team.

The players led the Toros to a 17-3 record and the No. 5 ranking in Division II last season. It is the second time Grasso has received the honor and the first for Rubin.

Grasso, a midfielder, scored six goals and 19 points and finished her Dominguez Hills career with 23 goals and 72 points. She ranks third on the school’s all-time scoring list and third in assists with 26.

Rubin, a forward, led the California Collegiate Athletic Assn. with 16 goals and 40 points and is the school’s career leader with 60 goals and 140 points.

Both players were previously selected to the All-CCAA first team and Rubin was named the conference player of the year.

The Dominguez Hills men’s basketball team will play host to Capital University of Ohio in a nonconference game at 7:30 p.m. Monday in Carson.

Dominguez Hills and Capital both enter the game at 6-2.

Capital, an NCAA Division III school, is led by senior center Blaine Roush, who averages 16.9 points and 7.3 rebounds. He also leads the Crusaders in assists, blocked shots and steals.

Dominguez Hills has been led by senior guard Raymond Bennett, who is averaging 16.4 points, and senior forward Vincent Washington, who averages 13 points and 7.3 rebounds. Bennett scored 21 points to lead the Toros to a 56-40 victory Tuesday over Cal State Hayward.

He also scored 25 points in two games to lead the Toros to a third-place finish in the Holiday Classic tournament last week at Cal State Bakersfield and was named to the all-tournament team.

Two other players scoring in double figures are sophomore guard Chris Thompson at 12.3 points and junior center Darnell Patterson at 12.

The Loyola Marymount women’s basketball team, which has won three games in a row for the first time since the start of last season, will travel to Buffalo, N.Y., for nonconference games Monday and Wednesday.

The Lions (5-2) will play Canisius Monday night and Buffalo Wednesday night. Canisius is 1-3 and Buffalo 1-6.

It will be the first meeting for Loyola against either school.

Loyola has been led by junior forward Sheri Brown, a transfer from Fresno State who averages 15.6 points and 10.1 rebounds. Brown has scored in double figures in points and rebounds in every game this season.

The Manhattan Beach Parks and Recreation Department is sponsoring a basketball program for seventh- and eighth-graders that starts Jan. 4 at Manhattan Beach Intermediate School.

There is no charge.

Registration is at the department office in Manhattan Beach City Hall, 1400 Highland Ave., and at Manhattan Heights Community Center, 1600 Manhattan Beach Blvd.
