UC Irvine Wins, Will Play Georgetown for Title : College basketball: The Anteaters defeat Southern California College, 111-77. The Hoyas beat Hawaii Pacific.

Southern California College, an 800-student NAIA school in Costa Mesa, hadn’t had a chance to play UC Irvine since 1976.

The Vanguards probably aren’t eager for another opportunity any time soon.

Irvine scored the first 22 points and held the Vanguards scoreless for the first 5 minutes 54 seconds of the Anteaters’ 111-77 victory before 3,218 in the first round of the Disneyland Freedom Bowl Classic at the Bren Center.

Irvine will play 10th-ranked Georgetown in the tournament final at 8 p.m. Wednesday.

“Anybody’s beatable,” Irvine Coach Rod Baker said. “Yes, I think we can beat them. We’re going to try.”

The Vanguards missed their first 10 shots and Jeff Von Lutzow’s three-pointer gave Irvine a 22-0 lead. Five seconds later, Danin Bryant’s layup gave the Vanguards their first points with 14:06 left in the half.

“We didn’t expect to come in here and maybe knock them off, but we hoped to be competitive,” Vanguard Coach Bill Reynolds said. “It seemed like a good idea to play in this tournament in July. Now I’m not so sure we belonged.”

Irvine (2-3) got 23 points and nine rebounds from Von Lutzow. Five other players scored in double figures, including LaDay Smith and Dee Boyer, each with 13.

The Vanguards got as close as 14 points, but Irvine lead by 20 at halftime.

Danin and John Naro each scored 16 points for the Vanguards (5-5).

Georgetown 78, Hawaii Pacific 65--Hawaii Pacific made a wearying journey from Oahu to play the Hoyas. The Sea Warriors (11-3) didn’t arrive in Irvine until noon Monday, six hours before tipoff, because their flight out of Honolulu was delayed until 1 a.m.

But seven minutes into the game, the little NAIA school had a 10-point lead on the Hoyas.

Georgetown (6-0) didn’t let the upset happen, though, taking a six-point halftime lead.

Georgetown’s freshman center, Othella Harrington, scored 26 points and had 11 rebounds, eight of them on offense, and was the only player in the game who played all 40 minutes.

“I told the team everybody is going to look at the name, Hawaii Pacific, and think you can walk away with it. But that’s not going to happen,” Georgetown Coach John Thompson said.

Hawaii Pacific’s David Smith, who made four of five three-pointers during the first half, made only one during the second and finished with 17 points. Mike Johnson added 18 points and five assists.

Robert Churchwell and Joey Brown of Georgetown each scored 16 points.
