Quarterback John Elway of the Denver Broncos will undergo surgery on his left shoulder next Tuesday.

Doctors will shave the bone in his shoulder, which the Denver Bronco quarterback injured in the opening game of the season against the Raiders.

Elway sat out four games this season because of a bruised right shoulder.

Doctors at the Cleveland Clinic put two screws in Bernie Kosar’s broken right ankle, and the quarterback of the Cleveland Browns is expected to make a complete recovery.

Kosar initially broke the ankle in September when he was sacked in the second quarter of a loss to the Miami Dolphins. He was sidelined for 10 weeks.

He broke the ankle again in the same spot in the second quarter of Sunday’s season finale at Pittsburgh.

Wide receiver Lawyer Tillman of the Browns also underwent successful surgery for a broken right ankle.

Bill Cowher of the Pittsburgh Steelers, young enough at 35 to still be playing football, was named coach of the year by the Associated Press.

Cowher, the second youngest coach in the NFL, received 23 of 79 votes from a nationwide panel of media members, edging Bobby Ross of the San Diego Chargers, who got 20.

Cowher guided the Steelers from a 7-9 record last season to 11-5 and the AFC Central title, Pittsburgh’s first division crown since 1984 and its best record since winning its fourth Super Bowl after the 1979 season.

Mike Holmgren of the Green Bay Packers received 9 1/2 votes and Dennis Green of the Minnesota Vikings had eight.

Wide receiver Mark Clayton of the Miami Dolphins issued an apology for calling former Boston Herald reporter Lisa Olson an obscene name after Sunday’s victory at New England. Olson, a victim of sexual harassment in the Patriots’ locker room two years ago, was not at the game.
