Police in Miami are mystified at what caused a van window to shatter and seriously injure a freshman player on the Michigan women’s basketball team. But they say they have ruled out a gunshot.
Tannisha Stevens, 18, was upbeat after weekend surgery at Bascom Palmer Eye Institute to remove glass from her right eye. Doctors were not certain how much of her vision will be restored.
“We went over the van with a fine-tooth comb and found no rocks, no cement chunks, no bullets, no exit hole, nothing,” said David Magnusson, an officer. “That leads us to believe convincingly that there was no criminal activity. It was an unfortunate accident.”
The driver of the SuperShuttle van that was carrying Stevens and two teammates from the airport to their downtown hotel Saturday told fire-rescue personnel he hit a bump on a state highway and the window broke.
Stevens was on the bench Tuesday as her teammates beat Bucknell in the Holiday Classic at the University of Miami for their first victory of the season.
