California IN BRIEF : HEMET : Armed Woman Takes Hostage
A woman walked into a Social Security office, pulled out a gun and took at least one hostage, holding officers at bay for five hours before surrendering. Police SWAT team members in this Riverside County community surrounded the downtown building where the office is located, and negotiators talked to the unidentified woman by phone. Police refused to say what, if anything, the woman demanded before she gave up about 9:15 p.m. Authorities confirmed that the woman held at least one hostage after she walked into the building at 4:20 p.m.
