The Encinitas San Dieguito girls’ soccer team came to Orange County this week risking its 41-game unbeaten streak to find better competition. The Mustangs found it, but they did emerge from their trip unscathed.

Almost.

San Dieguito (9-0-2), the two-time defending San Diego Section 3-A champion which hasn’t lost a game since January 1991, pushed its streak to 46 games, but Edison took the championship of the Excalibur tournament Thursday by winning a penalty-kick shootout at Foothill High School.

The score was tied, 1-1, after 70 minutes of regulation play, and 2-2, after 20 minutes of overtime. It was only settled after nine rounds of penalty kicks when three consecutive successful kicks by Edison’s Tami Letterman, Maili Williams and Jenna Biefeld combined with two consecutive San Dieguito misses finished it.

Edison (9-3-1), ranked third in Orange County, took a 1-0 lead four minutes into the game, after Erin Bailey broke behind the San Dieguito defense and passed to Williams, who put it in the right corner of the net.

After the goal, Edison seemed content to sit on its lead. Edison Coach Kerry McGrath said her team was worn out after its 1-0 victory over top-ranked and defending tournament champion El Toro earlier Thursday.

“Our team is really tired, quite exhausted,” McGrath said. “We were just going on guts here. It wasn’t their prettiest soccer.”

Two minutes into the first overtime period, Edison freshman Shauna Itri dribbled through the Mustangs defense down the heart of the field and scored into the left corner of the net. But two minutes later, Cindy Carullo evened the score with a hard shot that Hinkey deflected into the net.

In the consolation final:

Dana Hills 1, Fountain Valley 0--Jessica Stahlin scored and Stephanie Boes had six saves for Dana Hills (11-4-1).

The Dolphins defeated Esperanza, 1-0, in a consolation semifinal on a first-half goal by Jenny Uriate. Fountain Valley had tied San Clemente, 2-2, in the other semifinal and advanced by winning the shootout, 4-2.
