MONTEREY HILLS : Hearing Scheduled on Senior Housing

A South Pasadena man wants to build a 52-unit apartment complex for low-income senior citizens but needs a variance in city zoning for the property.

A public hearing is scheduled for 11 a.m. Thursday on the matter at City Hall, Room 250-B, 200 N. Spring St.

Carlos Sanchez, who owns the vacant three-acre property at 4224 and 4228 Guardia Ave., said he has the signatures of 300 nearby residents who support the construction.

“I decided to do something for my community, for low-income senior citizens who can’t afford to pay rent,” Sanchez said. He said the apartments would rent for about $400 a month, or “about half of the going rate.”

The lots are zoned for single-family residences. Sanchez said he and his son have received city approval to build six homes on the site.

Sanchez has enlisted the help of architect Judy Williams to design a building and hopes to start construction as soon as he receives permission from the city.

“That place is just an eyesore now and a big pain for the Fire Department,” Sanchez said. “Our senior citizens need something like (the apartment building).”

The public may address the zoning administrator regarding the plans at the hearing or submit written comments before then.
