COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Long Beach Scores in Final Seconds to Edge Titan Women

Chenise Butler scored off Marsheela Harriston’s assist with 14 seconds remaining to give Cal State Long Beach an 80-78 victory over Cal State Fullerton in a Big West Conference women’s basketball game Monday at Cal State Long Beach.

Butler had 24 points and 11 rebounds to lead the 49ers (3-6, 2-0 in conference) and Neisha Williams added 15 points.

Allison Jackson, who scored a career-high 30 points for the Titans (2-6, 0-2) also had seven steals and five assists. Teammates Shefonda Colbert and Faye Hagan each added 13 points.

The score was tied, 36-36, at halftime, but Fullerton shot only 28.6% from the field in the second half. The Titans kept it close by making 27 of 34 free throws for the game.

In other nonconference games:

Chapman 45, Occidental 44--Heidi Sorour made a baseline eight-footer with eight seconds left to give host Chapman (2-10) its second victory in three games. The Panthers opened the season with nine consecutive losses.

Sorour, a junior guard from Saddleback College, got a rebound with 25 seconds left and Chapman trailing, 44-43. After a timeout, Chapman worked the ball around until guard Sig Lo passed to Sorour, who was open cutting along the baseline.

Occidental (5-3) called a timeout after the basket but failed to get a shot off before time ran out.

Sorour finished with a team-high 14 points for Chapman (2-10). Lo had made two free throws with 2:13 left to get Chapman within a point, 44-43.

Jennifer Kunz had 14 points for Occidental, which failed to score in the final 4:30.

Christ College Irvine 76, Alaska Fairbanks 59--Stacey Giem scored 20 points and Gitte Mejer had 19 points and 11 rebounds to lead host CCI. Stacy Kirch scored 17 points, making four of four three-point shots, and also had eight assists and seven steals for the Eagles.

In nonconference men’s basketball:

Southern California College 101, Pasadena Ambassador (Tex.) 87--Mike West had 20 points and 12 rebounds to lead visiting SCC (7-6). Danin Bryant had 17 points and six assists, and Scott Campbell and John Naro each added 16 points for the Vanguards.

Although both teams shot 49% from the field, SCC made 25 of 35 at the foul line, and Ambassador made nine of its 11 attempts. Amman Thomas scored 25 points and Randy Pack added 21 for Ambassador.
