George Brett announced that he will return for his 20th season.
Brett, who will take a pay cut to $2.5 million from $3.1 million with the Kansas City Royals, will get a $1-million bonus when he retires.
“I’m not playing baseball for the money,” Brett said, disappointed with the failure of the Royals to renegotiate his contract. “That’s obvious after what happened to me this winter.”
Brett, who will turn 40 in May, got his 3,000th hit last year. He has a .307 lifetime average and is the only player to have won batting titles in each of three decades, batting .333 in 1976, .390 in 1980 and .329 in 1990.
