24 Graduate From Fullerton Tutor Training Workshop

The Fullerton affiliate of the Literacy Volunteers of America presented tutor certificates to 24 graduates from the tutor training workshop at the Fullerton Library.

The graduates are Debbie Bancks, Philip E. Cohen, Rebecca A. Dahl, Elaine Dennault, Kay Elhami, Cheryl A. Heil, Nancy A. Holmes, Lynn M. Lewis, Elena Lejano, Monica Macchiavello, Christa L. Machir, Rita Maellaro, Carol A. Peti, Philomena A. Scola, Michael T. Sieverson and Mel Vargas, all of Fullerton.

Others are Haley Dawson and Paul W. Vanderley, Anaheim; Harriet M. Boone and Carol A. Monko, Yorba Linda; Trevor Colon and Bonnie R. Lindgren, Orange; Kim Varhoef, Lake Forest, and Michelle Bouas, Alhambra.

They will teach any adult basic reading skills and foreign-born individuals the English language on a one-to-one basis.

Karen Johnson, a Newport Beach resident and executive director of the Discovery Science Center and Discovery Museum of Orange County, has been named Outstanding Nonprofit Executive for 1992 by the Orange County chapter of the National Society of Fund Raising Executives.

She has been with the center since 1983. Each year more than 20,000 people visit the museum, which focuses on teaching what life was like at the turn of the century in Orange County.

Santa Ana resident Pat Hofferbert has been named the new president of the 72-year-old Kiwanis Club of Santa Ana which has a membership of 93.

Orange Coast College’s culinary arts department won two gold medals, a silver and the Best of Show award at the recent Palm Springs Culinary Salon which drew entries from college teams and professionals from throughout the Southwest.

Bill Barber, OCC culinary arts instructor, won a gold medal and Best of Show honors while the OCC student team of Matt O’Neil of Huntington Beach, Laurence Kooyenga of Orange and Joel Bachhuber of Corona won a gold medal for their seven-course meal.

The OCC student team of Steven Edelstein of Orange, Vera Maurer of Garden Grove and Denise Ronquille of Huntington Beach won a silver medal.

Duane Liedahl of Cypress was recently awarded a Ph.D. in astrophysics from UC Berkeley to join his brother, Steven Liedahl, who was awarded his Ph.D. in mathematics from UCLA earlier last year. They are the sons of Alice and Ken Liedahl of Cypress.

Tim Lewis, 18, a Buena Park resident and a freshman at Fullerton College, received his Boy Scout Eagle rank at a court of honor at Walter Knott School in Buena Park.

For his community project, Lewis helped rebuild and restore a trail at Oak Canyon Nature Center, which depends on volunteer work to maintain the trails.

He is the son of Rita and Loyd Lewis of Buena Park.

Julie E. Yamamoto, a Huntington Beach resident and student at USC, has been awarded a $2,500 Freedom Forum Journalism scholarship. She was selected from a field of 1,000 applicants by a committee of journalism faculty members on the basis of her developing communications skills, educational aptitude and personal qualities.

Registered nurse Linda Anderson of Los Alamitos has been named Community Services and ElderMed Coordinator of La Palma Intercommunity Hospital and will be responsible for promoting hospital services to older adults in the community.

Irvine resident Dr. Laurence D. Wellikson, an assistant clinical professor at UC Irvine, was named to fill an unexpired, two-year term as a trustee of the American Society of Internal Medicine, a national medical society that represents more than 26,000 internists nationwide.
