Defensive specialist Nate Tubbs picked the right time to get offensive.

Tubbs scored a career-high 16 points Saturday night to help Minnesota upset ninth-ranked Purdue, 81-60, in a Big Ten Conference game at Minneapolis.

“The shots came, and they were good shots,” Tubbs said. “Part of being a senior is knowing when to take good shots within the offense. I got on sort of a roll for a while, and I was fortunate enough to have teammates looking for me.”

Voshon Lenard and Jayson Walton each scored 17 points for Minnesota (10-1 overall, 2-0 in the Big Ten) as the Gophers sent the Boilermakers (9-2, 0-2) to their second consecutive defeat. Glenn Robinson had 25 points for Purdue.

Joe Temple sank two free throws with one second left to give San Diego (6-6, 1-0) a 59-57 victory over Santa Clara (6-7, 0-1) in the West Coast Conference opener at Santa Clara. Anfernee Hardaway scored seven of his 35 points in the final minute of the second overtime and Memphis State (8-5) got past DePaul, 95-93, in a Great Midwest Conference opener at Rosemont, Ill. Tommy Kleinschmidt had 27 points for the Blue Demons (8-5). . . .
