PREP ROUNDUP : Seventh-Ranked ElDorado Wrestlers Roll Over Katella

El Dorado, ranked seventh in Orange County, defeated Katella, 39-6, in an Empire League wrestling match at El Dorado High.

Ishmail Abdullah defeated Mike Ramos at 140 pounds and Rob Harvey defeated Mike Moreno at 103 to lead El Dorado. Katella’s Alex Vargas won at 119, defeating El Dorado’s Tommy Noel. El Dorado’s top wrestler Kirk Offel, ranked first at 125 pounds in Southern Section Division II and third in the county, did not compete because Katella forfeited his match.

In other Empire League wrestling:

Loara 63, Cypress 9--Heavyweight George Hernandez registered a pin in 14 seconds for host Loara (7-3, 1-0).

In Garden Grove League wrestling:

Kennedy 48, Garden Grove 21--Steve Sedillos registered a pin in 1 minute 20 seconds at 152 pounds to lead Kennedy (14-6, 1-1) over Garden Grove (5-5, 1-1). Kennedy’s Paul Soto raised his record to 19-1 with a victory at 171.

In an Academy League boys’ basketball game:

St. Margaret’s 65, Liberty Christian 63--Damian Raibon, who had 34 points, made two free throws with three seconds remaining for St. Margaret’s. With his team trailing by one point with 20 seconds left, Toby Curto, who had 20 points, made the front end of a one-and-one to tie it, 63-63, for Liberty Christian. After Raibon shot the free throws, Liberty Christian had a chance to score. The Minutemen (8-4, 0-1) got the ball back and Curto was fouled. He then missed the front end of the one-and-one.

In Express League boys’ basketball:

Heritage Christian 83, Harbor City Gateway Christian 74--Ryan Drabek scored 21 points and Tom Houser added 20 for visiting Heritage Christian (6-1, 4-0). Teammates Alan Dixon and Steve Acheson scored 19 points each.

In Olympic League boys’ basketball:

Whittier Christian 58, Capistrano Valley Christian 57 (OT)--Jeff Rutter scored five of his 14 points in overtime, including three of three free throws, for the host Heralds (7-7, 2-1). Rutter, who was playing with slightly torn ankle ligaments, made a three-pointer with two seconds remaining in regulation to tie it, 51-51. Chuck Carlsen had 18 points and Scott Harline added 16 for Capistrano Valley Christian (12-2, 2-1).

Brethren Christian 65, Orange Lutheran 51--Scott Thomas scored 17 points and Seth Carey added 11 for Brethren Christian (8-7, 3-0). Orange Lutheran is 5-7, 0-2.

Calvary Chapel 91, Valley Christian 71--Sabe Younger scored 34 points and Chase Lubbock added 25 for Calvary Chapel (6-9, 1-1). Valley Christian got 31 points from Tim Thymes.

In Sea View League girls’ soccer:

Woodbridge 2, Newport Harbor 1--Polly Gifford and Brooke Kelly scored goals for Woodbridge (4-4-2, 1-2-1). Host Newport Harbor (6-6, 1-2) got its goal from Diane Kelsey.

Santa Margarita 1, Irvine 1--Katie Roda scored for Irvine, which also knocked in the goal for Santa Margarita (7-1-6, 3-0-1).

Corona del Mar 3, Tustin 0--Stefanie Hughes scored all three goals and goalkeeper Laura Drumright made seven saves to lead Corona del Mar (7-3-3, 3-1).

In Empire League girls’ soccer:

El Dorado 1, Katella 0--Liz Levens scored in the first half for visiting El Dorado (8-5, 2-0). Katella is 7-5-3, 0-2.

Los Alamitos 4, Esperanza 0--Liz Willemse scored three goals and goalkeeper Heather Thomas made eight saves to lead Los Alamitos (9-2-1, 2-0) over visiting Esperanza (3-6-4, 1-1).

In Garden Grove League girls’ soccer:

Kennedy 7, La Quinta 0--Laurie Fritz had two goals and two assists for host Kennedy (6-2-3, 1-0).

Brea-Olinda 2, Western 0--Erin Wright and Amy Alexander scored goals as Brea-Olinda (5-6-2, 1-0) blanked Western (3-5-2, 0-1).
