Rosemont, La Canada Schools Receive Kudos

Rosemont Junior High in Glendale and La Canada High School are two of 40 nominees from California for the 1992-93 Blue Ribbon Schools program sponsored by the U.S. Department of Education.

Nominees were selected based on school leadership, teaching environment, student environment, curriculum and instruction, and parent and community support.

Educational leaders will review the nominated schools at the end of this month, with schools selected for national recognition to be announced in May.

La Canada Teacher Honored by Students

Biology teacher Patty Compeau of La Canada High School will be honored for her work in science and mathematics education during Harvey Mudd College’s Teacher Recognition Program on Jan. 23-25. Compeau is among 19 teachers from across the country nominated by college freshmen as instructors who most inspired them and encouraged them to continue their education.

Compeau and the other honorees will receive plaques and spend time with Harvey Mudd College faculty and students in workshops, classrooms and laboratories. Harvey Mudd College is an undergraduate coeducational institution of engineering, science and mathematics in Claremont.

Health Center to Open at L.A. City College

Los Angeles City College’s new student health center will open with the spring semester Tuesday.

Located in Administration Building 115, the center is staffed with a nurse and an assistant, and offers emergency first aid, health counseling, vision tests, TB skin tests, pregnancy tests, immunizations, crisis intervention and health care information and referrals.

Hours are 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday through Friday, and Monday through Thursday from 5 to 7 p.m.
