A 4-year-old girl who was nearly beaten to death by her mother’s live-in boyfriend remained in critical condition and on life support at Children’s Hospital of Orange County, police said Wednesday.

Jose Antonio Parrilla, 33, was arrested and placed in Orange County Jail on suspicion of felony child abuse.

Police said Parrilla called paramedics just after 3 a.m. Tuesday to the apartment he shares with the girl, her 5-year-old sister and their 25-year-old mother, whose names were not released.

“He dialed the 911 operator and stated that the 4-year-old was unconscious and not breathing because he had struck the child several times the day before,” said Garden Grove Police Sgt. Dale Farley.

When paramedics arrived at the apartment in the 10000 block of Palma Vista Avenue, the child was in full cardiac arrest. She was rushed to Garden Grove Hospital, where she was revived. She was later transferred to CHOC’s pediatric intensive care unit in Orange, Farley said.

Parrilla is being held at Orange County Jail in lieu of $100,000 bail.
