NEW RELEASES / JAZZ : In Brief

Share

*** Lin Halliday, “East of the Sun,” Delmark. This tenor man, little acknowledged outside of Chicago, where he resides, makes pleasing statement in the traditional, acoustic modern jazz mode. His sound is heavy yet has an open, woody quality, and his improvisations are replete with curving, surprising thoughts. Ira Sullivan, that wonder, adds distinctive touches on muted trumpet on “I Found a New Baby” and on alto flute on the title track. Halliday, a Rollins fan, is his most Sonny-ish on “Paradox,” one of Rollins’ fine originals.
