The Region : Officials Want New INS Site
El Monte Mayor Patricia Wallach and Councilwoman Maria Avila are calling for the Immigration and Naturalization Service to open a satellite office in the San Gabriel Valley.
“We have a large population that could be served by an INS office here,” Wallach said, during a city-aided INS “green card” replacement drive Thursday.
Although city officials have not broached the idea to the INS, Wallach said the turnout Thursday convinced her of the city’s need for an INS office apart from the one in downtown Los Angeles.
More than a dozen volunteers helped INS officials Thursday process new cards for 400 resident aliens at the El Monte Community Center, 3130 Tyler Ave.
Another 400 are expected to apply for new cards Thursday. A waiting list exists for others seeking cards, Wallach said.
