Hawaii’s Jason Elam kicked his second field goal of the game, a 28-yarder with 51 seconds to play, to give the West a 13-10 victory over the East in the Hula Bowl on Saturday at Honolulu.
The East had a chance to tie, but Notre Dame kicker Craig Hentrich missed a 65-yard field goal with two seconds left. The kick was long enough, but wide to the left.
East Coach Lou Holtz of Notre Dame chose not to let Hentrich try a 52-yard field goal with 7:32 to play. Instead, Florida’s Shane Matthews threw an incomplete pass on fourth and six from the West 36.
The West drove 67 yards in eight plays on its first possession, with UCLA’s Kevin Williams scoring on a six-yard run. After Elam’s 30-yard field goal with 8:02 to play in the half, Virginia’s Terry Kirby scored on a one-yard run for the East.
