Joey Ramirez, Ventura’s freshman guard from Santa Paula High, was named the Western State Conference men’s Player of the Week. Ramirez scored 38 points in victories against Bakersfield and West Los Angeles. He was 12 of 20 from the field, including 10 of 18 from three-point range, and made all four of his free-throw attempts. Ramirez averages 12.2 points per game. . . .

Men’s basketball: Valley’s Brian Jackson has narrowed the gap between himself and West Los Angeles’ Keith London among WSC rebounders to one board per game. Jackson, a 6-foot-4 freshman center, is averaging 10.6 rebounds to London’s 11.6. Jackson helped his cause with a 21-rebound effort in an 86-82 overtime victory against Cuesta last week. That’s the single-game high for a WSC player this season. . . . Glendale freshman guard Kenny Collins, formerly of Cleveland High, continues to lead WSC free-throw shooters with a 91.7 percentage. Going into Wednesday’s game at Canyons, Collins was 55 of 60 from the line.

Moorpark reached the 100-point mark in a game for the second time this season with a 100-99 victory over Bakersfield last week. The Raiders beat Hancock, 105-94, in the Ventura tournament in late November. . . . Ventura, the state’s top-ranked team, hasn’t scored 100 points in a game this season. The Pirates, who are winning their games by a margin of 15.7 points, came closest with a 99-77 victory over El Camino at the Glendale tournament in mid-December.

Damon Ridley and Rupert Sapwell of Cal Lutheran are tied for third nationally in steals with 4.0 per game through the latest Division III rankings. As a team, the Kingsmen are ranked first in scoring margin (26.2 points per game) and 11th in scoring (91.7 points per game).

Although CLU has four players in double figures and two others averaging more than nine points per game, Ridley is beginning to pull away from the pack with a team-leading 14.8 scoring average. In two Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference games he is averaging 30.0 points.

Women’s basketball: A freshman also received the WSC Player of the Week honors in the women’s division. Canyon’s Jana Kovar, who scored 38 points and grabbed 35 rebounds in two victories by the Cougars, got the nod. She had a season-high 27 points with 18 rebounds in a 92-79 victory Jan. 13 against Moorpark. Moorpark’s Tamara Pacheco led all scorers in that game with 33 points. . . . Pierce’s Yolanda Davidian, the leader among WSC players in scoring (23.5 points) and rebounding (13.7 average), scored 53 points in two games last week. Davidian had 30 points and 22 rebounds in an 86-48 victory over Oxnard.

Ventura and Valley continue to dominate their WSC opponents, winning their games by margins of 26.7 points and 21.8 points, respectively. At the other end, Oxnard remains only one step ahead of Compton in futility, with an average margin of defeat of 24.4 points per conference game. Compton’s margin of defeat is 30.4 points.

Nicole Albert has scored in double figures in seven consecutive games for CLU, including 15 points in a 54-47 loss Tuesday night to Redlands. Nicole’s sister, Evelyn Albert, ended her streak of consecutive games in double figures at six with a season-low four points against the Bulldogs. Evelyn is averaging a team-high 16.3 points per game and Nicole has a 14.5 average.

Statistics through Tuesday.
