COLLEGE BASKETBALL REGIONAL ROUNDUP : Iowa St. Gets Orr Back, Sinks Oklahoma, 81-74

Iowa State Coach Johnny Orr came back Saturday, and so did the Cyclones.

On the bench for the first time since Jan. 9, Orr saw the Cyclones rally to upset No. 12 Oklahoma, 81-74, in overtime in a Big Eight conference game at Ames, Iowa.

“I was glad I was here for this one,” said Orr, who missed the last three games and four of the last five because of flu. “I don’t feel good, but I feel better than I have been. When you’re 65, it’s hard to feel terrific.”

Ron Bayless scored 16 of his 25 points after halftime, and made the big plays in overtime, sinking four free throws and making two steals. Iowa State scored eight consecutive points to open a 78-71 lead in overtime, then made three of four free throws in the final 22 seconds.

The Cyclones (11-5 overall, 2-2 in the Big Eight) overcame a 59-51 deficit with 7 1/2 minutes left and sent the game into overtime on Howard Eaton’s jump shot with 18 seconds remaining.

Bryan Sallier of Oklahoma (12-5, 1-2) missed two free throws with 52 seconds left in regulation and three of four in overtime.

WEST

John Woolery’s three-pointer with four seconds left boosted Santa Clara (9-8, 3-2) over Portland, 77-74, in a West Coast Conference game at Portland. Grant Tracy scored 22 points for the Pilots (1-3, 7-9). . . . Tony Amundsen had 27 points and eight steals to lead Pacific (8-7, 4-3) to an 86-79 Big West Conference victory over Utah State (6-8, 3-3) at Stockton. . . . Jeff Brown scored 21 points and Gonzaga (11-5, 3-1) defeated San Diego (7-9, 2-3) in a WCC game, 79-64, at Spokane, Wash. . . . Jason Allen scored 21 points and Kevin Logan added 20 to lead San Jose State (4-9, 1-4) to a 73-70 Big West victory over Nevada (7-7, 2-5) at San Jose. . . . Kevin Nixon scored 27 points, including six in overtime, as Brigham Young (12-5, 6-1) overcame Hawaii, 84-80, in a Western Athletic Conference game at Provo, Utah. Tervor Ruffin scored 31 points for the Rainbows (5-10, 1-6). . . . Eddie Rivera’s basket with eight seconds remaining lifted Texas El Paso (12-6, 5-3) to a 63-61 WAC victory over Colorado State (12-5, 4-3). . . . Ike Williams scored 24 points as New Mexico (12-4, 5-3) shook off Wyoming (10-6, 4-3) for a 77-67 WAC victory at Albuquerque, N.M.

EAST

St. John’s (10-4, 5-1) sank 10 consecutive free throws over the final 1:15 to beat Syracuse, 78-71, in a Big East Conference game at Syracuse, N.Y. The Redmen held Lawrence Moten of the Orangemen (10-5, 2-5) to 12 points, more than eight below his average. . . . Howard Eisley scored 22 points, including four free throws in the final 23 seconds, leading Boston College (10-5, 4-3) to a 65-58 win over Villanova (5-8, 1-6) in a Big East game at Villanova, Pa. . . . Marsalis Basey scored four of his 36 points during the second overtime to lead West Virginia (9-5, 2-2) past St. Joseph’s, 82-81, in an Atlantic 10 Conference game at Morgantown, W.Va. Bernard Blunt scored 30 points for the Hawks (9-4, 3-1).

MIDWEST

Jayson Walton had 21 points and 10 rebounds to help Minnesota (11-4, 3-3) beat Northwestern, 70-55, at Minneapolis, giving Coach Clem Haskins his 100th victory with the Gophers. The Wildcats (5-8, 0-4) have lost 57 consecutive Big Ten road games and 37 in a row on the road overall. . . . Ron Curry scored 23 points as Marquette (14-2) made 35 of 36 free throws and defeated Memphis State, 78-66, at Milwaukee. Anfernee Hardaway had 25 points for the Tigers (11-7). . . . Monty Williams scored 17 points and Notre Dame (8-7) downed LaSalle, 72-63, at South Bend, Ind. Kareem Townes had 23 points for the Explorers (8-7). . . . Vincent Jackson scored 17 points, including two last-minute free throws, as Kansas State (11-3, 3-1) beat Nebraska (12-6, 0-3) for a 66-64 Big Eight victory at Lincoln, Neb.

Anthony Lewis had 26 points and 13 rebounds as Baylor (11-4, 3-1) handed Rice (9-5, 4-1) its first Southwest Conference loss, 96-87, at Waco, Tex. Brent Scott had 24 points for the Owls. . . . David Diaz scored 24 points to lead Houston (11-2, 4-0) to an 85-75 SWC victory over Southern Methodist (10-5, 3-1) at Houston. . . . Michael Richardson scored 33 points to lead Texas (7-7, 1-4) past Texas Tech, 92-74, in a SWC game at Austin, Tex. Will Flemons scored 31 points for the Red Raiders (8-6, 0-3).

Kevin McLinton scored 27 points, leading Maryland (10-5, 1-4) to a 70-63 ACC victory over North Carolina State (4-9, 0-5) at Raleigh, N.C. . . . Carlin Hartman had 17 points to spark Tulane (14-3) to a 71-53 victory over South Florida (3-10) at Tampa, Fla. . . . Chuck Evans scored 20 points and Mississippi State (9-7, 2-4) registered a 66-53 SEC victory over Alabama (9-6, 2-4) at Starkville, Miss. . . .
