Kendrick Warren, a 6-foot-8 forward, made nine of 10 shots during the first half and finished with 27 points as Virginia Commonwealth beat No. 25 Cal State Long Beach, 95-61, on Saturday.

“Kendrick Warren was out of sight in the first half,” Ram Coach Sonny Smith said.

Center Sherron Mills came off the bench to get 18 points, 12 rebounds, three blocks and two steals for Virginia Commonwealth.

“It’s the best Kendrick Warren and Sherron Mills have played together this year,” Smith said.

Long Beach (13-3), ranked nationally for the first time since 1974, was never in the game. In their first eight possessions, the 49ers had five turnovers, a three-pointer and two free throws.

Virginia Commonwealth (10-5) controlled the boards during the first half and led by 45-24 at intermission.

Virginia Commonwealth scored eight of the first 10 points of the second half to take a 53-26 lead, and extended that to 91-52 with 3:53 remaining.

“We’re obviously not as bad as we played tonight,” Long Beach Coach Seth Greenberg said. “Our kids were a step slow, and we didn’t defend as well as we can.”

It was Long Beach’s fifth game in eight days played over three time zones.

“We had no energy. It’s hard to travel through three time zones,” Greenberg said.

Smith said it was an important victory for the Rams.

“It’s a big win for us, regardless of how they played. They have credibility,” he said.

Lucious Harris scored 25 points to lead Long Beach. Chris Tower, who had been averaging 15.1 points, was held to five.
