A worker buried under debris was killed Monday and four others were injured when the concrete roof of a large water reservoir under construction collapsed.

The construction worker who died, Nicolas Ramos, 31, of Hemet, was in the 34-foot-deep pit when the supports holding a section of roof collapsed. The injured men were on top of the roof.

All were employed by Jack Kettering Co., the subcontractor handling the concrete work on the reservoir being built for the Irvine Ranch Water District and Santiago County Water District.

A specially trained Orange County Fire Department rescue team labored unsuccessfully for more than two hours to save the buried worker.
