PREP BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : Brethren Christian Hangs On to Beat Whittier Christian

Seth Carey made a three-point basket with 45 seconds left to give Brethren Christian a four-point lead, and the Warriors hung on for a 47-46 victory over Whittier Christian in an Olympic League boys’ basketball game Tuesday at Brethren Christian.
Carey’s basket gave Brethren Christian a 47-43 lead. Whittier Christian’s Kwadwo Boachie then made a three-pointer for the final margin with 15 seconds left.
Whittier Christian got one final chance when Brethren Christian’s Richard Mendozo missed the front end of a one-and-one with 11 seconds left. The Heralds worked the ball around but failed to score as time expired.
Scott Thomas scored 15 points for first-place Brethren Christian (13-7, 7-0 in league). Scott Thomas had 15 for Whittier Christian (9-9, 4-3).
In another Olympic League game:
Capistrano Valley Christian 70, Orange Lutheran 55--Troy Rodarmel scored 22 points and Marquis Patterson had 13 for Capistrano Valley Christian (15-3, 5-2), which outscored Orange Lutheran by 14 points in the fourth quarter. Chad Reed scored 14 for Orange Lutheran (9-8, 4-3).
In Academy League boys’ basketball:
Liberty Christian 82, California Lutheran 27--Toby Curto scored 33 points for visiting Liberty Christian (11-4, 3-1).
St. Margaret’s 81, Compton South East Lutheran 49--Sophomore Damian Raibon had 29 points, 18 rebounds and three assists for St. Margaret’s (10-5, 4-0). Teammate Brian Askew added 10 points for St. Margaret’s, which picked up its fifth consecutive victory. South East Lutheran is 4-8, 1-3.
In the Express League:
Heritage Christian 84, Claremont 41--Tom Houser scored 21 points and Scott Smith added 13 for host Heritage Christian (10-1, 8-0). Alan Dixon and Ryan Drabek scored 12 points each for Heritage Christian, which led, 27-5, after one quarter and 43-8 at halftime.
In Express League girls’ basketball:
Heritage Christian 67, Claremont 20--Alisia Kean had 34 points and 20 rebounds for Heritage Christian (5-6, 3-3). Teammate Sheri Larson added 28 points.
In Garden Grove League girls’ basketball:
Rancho Alamitos 80, Garden Grove 51--Senior forward Timerie James had 25 points and 14 rebounds for sixth-ranked Rancho Alamitos (15-4, 8-0). Teammate Tracy Keller added 15 points. Michol Murray had 13 points for Garden Grove (11-7, 5-3).
In the Olympic League:
Capistrano Valley Christian 63, Orange Lutheran 26--Ivana Kovacic had 14 points and 12 rebounds and Marcy Giosa had 12 points and 10 steals for host Capistrano Valley Christian (13-4, 6-1). Orange Lutheran is 9-9, 3-4.
Whittier Christian 53, Brethren Christian 36--Joanna Giforos had 14 points and eight rebounds for Whittier Christian (10-7, 4-3). Brethren Christian is 3-11 and 0-7.
In the Orange League:
Brea-Olinda 98, Magnolia 25--Junior Nicole Erickson had 30 points, eight assists, seven steals and five rebounds in three quarters for host Brea-Olinda (18-2, 5-0), top-ranked in Orange County.
For Brea-Olinda, Lee Moulin had 17 points, Colleen Hudson had 16 and Tara Llanes 13.
Western 54, Anaheim 11--Kwanzaa Gibson had 12 points and Charlotte Watley had 10 rebounds for Western (9-10, 2-3).
Savanna 59, Valencia 47--Sara Works had 25 points and 15 rebounds and Stacey Aliff added 20 points, including three three-pointers for host Savanna (9-10, 4-1).
In the South Coast League:
Capistrano Valley 74, San Clemente 36--Susan Scott scored 18 points and her twin sister Katie had 15 to lead Capistrano Valley (16-3, 6-0).
