Seven Tied at 5 Under for Phoenix Open Lead
Gary McCord, more often an announcer than a contender, shot a five-under-par 66 Thursday and was among seven players tied for the first-round lead in the Phoenix Open.
Jeff Maggert, Michael Allen, Robert Wrenn, Mike Donald, David Frost and Scott Simpson joined McCord in the lead on the 6,992-yard TPC of Scottsdale course.
Ten other players, including two-time Phoenix champion Mark Calcavecchia and Larry Mize, who won at Tucson last week, shot 67s, and 11 others were at 68.
John Daly, after 3 1/2 weeks of alcohol-abuse rehabilitation, shot a 69.
