Cowboys Make Third Time Doomsday for Bills, 52-17

The Dallas Cowboys used quick touchdowns and nine Buffalo turnovers to turn Super Bowl XXVII into another NFC rout of the Bills, 52-17, Sunday at the Rose Bowl.

It was an unprecedented third consecutive Super Bowl defeat for the Bills and the ninth National Football Conference victory in a row.

Cowboy quarterback Troy Aikman threw four touchdown passes and was named most valuable player.

Aikman connected with Michael Irvin for two scores during an 18-second span late in the second quarter for a 28-10 halftime lead. Irvin beat Nate Odomes on a post pattern for a 19-yard scoring play. After Thurman Thomas fumbled on the Bills’ first play and Jimmie Jones recovered, Irvin beat James Williams for an 18-yard score.

The Bills lost quarterback Jim Kelly with 6:52 left in second quarter with a right knee injury. Frank Reich, hero of Buffalo’s historic playoff comeback against Houston, couldn’t pull off another miracle.

After the Bills took a 7-0 lead on Thurman Thomas’ run, Dallas turned an interception and a fumble into touchdowns.

Aikman found Jay Novacek for 23 yards and and the tying touchdown. Fifteen seconds later, Kelly was hit at the goal line by Charles Haley. Defensive tackle Jones caught the fumble in the air and went into the end zone from the two.
