Los Angeles City Councilwoman Joy Picus raised $40,125 to fund her campaign to win a fifth term representing the southwestern San Fernando Valley at City Hall, according to a campaign report received Wednesday by the city’s Ethics Commission.

The report shows Picus, veteran chairwoman of the city’s Human Resources and Labor Relations Committee, getting donations from nine unions that represent thousands of city workers, including the Police Protective League and United Firefighters of Los Angeles.

Picus also received help from corporate donors, such as Bank of America and Browning-Ferris Industries, owner of a controversial Granada Hills landfill.

But Picus is trailing challenger Laura Chick in fund raising. Earlier this week, Chick, a former Picus aide, reported she had raised almost $52,000 in her bid to unseat her ex-boss.

Chick has been the most successful fund-raiser of eight candidates seeking to unseat Picus in the April 20 election.

The financial reports filed this week covered candidate fund-raising activities during the last six months of 1992.
