LA HABRA : Council Endorses Disney Expansion
The City Council this week endorsed Disneyland’s proposed $3-billion expansion plans in Anaheim.
“I think it’ll be a good thing for the county,” Councilman James Flora said after Tuesday’s council meeting. “We wouldn’t benefit greatly by it, but we’ll get a little bit of benefit indirectly form it.”
Mayor William D. Mahoney said the proposed project--which would include new hotels and the Westcot Center, a second theme park--”means increased revenues for surrounding cities.”
Westcot 2000, a new organization of business and community leaders and residents, sent letters to all Orange County cities and chambers of commerce asking them to support the project, said its chairman, Stan Pawlowski.
Pawlowski said the Disney plan would create 28,000 permanent jobs and $2.4 billion in new tax revenue for Anaheim and other cities in Southern California.
“Disney does employ quite a few young kids so the likelihood of some kids from La Habra getting jobs there would be an indirect benefit to the city,” Flora said.
The number of Disneyland guests is expected to double to 24 million each year, Pawlowski said.
