LOS ANGELES : False Alarm Halts Red Line Operations for 55 Minutes

Share

Several thousand commuters on the Red Line downtown subway line were stranded or delayed during the evening rush hour Friday when power was cut off for 55 minutes because of a false alarm, authorities said.

It was the second major glitch in the Red Line’s seven days of operation. On Tuesday, 25 passengers were stranded for 80 minutes when an emergency brake activated at the MacArthur Park station.

The stoppage occurred at 5:17 p.m. when a controller at the maintenance headquarters heard an alarm and saw smoke coming from a computer room “and did as he should and shut down power to the entire line,” Rapid Transit District spokesman Greg Davy said. Fire officials quickly determined that there was no problem.

Some passengers were put on buses to reach their destinations along the 4.4-mile line.
