Four Central Los Angeles neighborhood groups were among the 11 honored recently for organizing volunteer efforts to combat trash and graffiti.

The 5th and Bonnie Brae MASH (More Advocates for Safer Homes) in Westlake, the 23rd St. Neighbors in North Exposition Park, the Crenshaw Christian Center and the Echo Park Improvement Assn. were among the neighborhood groups honored recently by the city and the National League of Cities for organizing volunteer efforts to combat the problems.

The city’s Operation Clean Sweep received the James C. Howland Urban Enrichment Award from the National League of Cities at its annual meeting last month.

The award, given to four cities each year, also recognized the neighborhood groups for their support of Operation Clean Sweep and their own contributions in cleaning up Los Angeles.

Mayor Tom Bradley presented certificates of commendation to other groups based in Silver Lake, Fairfax and the San Fernando Valley.
