South Pasadena : Street Closure Plan Opposed
Residents complained to the City Council on Wednesday that a station planned for the newly approved light-rail route between Los Angeles and Pasadena will force the city to close a main east-west road.
County Transportation Commissioners plan to ask the city to close El Centro Street because long north-south trains stopping at the Mission Street station will block the street to the south.
“There is going to be an uproar if we close that street,” resident William Evans said. “El Centro is one of three major streets that run west to east in the city.”
Residents suggested that the station be placed on the north side of Mission Street and that less-traveled Hope Street be closed.
Mayor Harold A. Knapp said no decision has been made on closing El Centro, and city officials will consider other alternatives.
City Manager Kenneth C. Farfsing said a public hearing will be held when the city receives a formal request from the commission to close El Centro and environmental impacts are studied.
