‘Super’ League Plan Set for Committee : Realignment: Three proposals would group the county’s most competitive schools together.

A proposal for a high school “super” league will be put before the realignment committee for the Orange County area Wednesday at Bolsa Grande High School, an Orange County high school administrator said.

A nine-member committee will hear three proposals, all of which include Esperanza, Mater Dei, Santa Ana, Servite and Tustin in the “super” league. Century is involved in two of the proposed leagues, and Saddleback is included in one. If approved, the realignment would begin in the 1994-95 school year.

Administrators and coaches from some of those schools are not happy with the plan. The superintendent of the Santa Ana Unified School District is expected to submit a counterproposal. Officials from Esperanza also are expected to submit their own plan.

The administrator, who asked not to be identified, said a super league would place the county’s largest and generally most competitive programs in one league. But coaches from some of the schools included in the proposal believe they cannot be competitive in such a league.

“I’m telling you, it’s beyond me,” Tustin football Coach Marijon Ancich said. “Here’s Tustin with 1,700 kids and a declining enrollment, and they want us to play in that league? I can’t believe it.”

The proposals will be heard by a committee consisting of one principal from each of the nine current county leagues. Discussion and suggestions also will be heard during the meeting.

Perhaps the most controversial of the three proposals moves Santa Margarita into the South Coast League, which goes against the format that places a parochial school in a league outside its area. Santa Margarita is currently in the Sea View League, Mater Dei in the South Coast League and Servite is in the Sunset League.

Administrators and coaches were strongly opposed to including parochial schools in a league with schools in the same geographic location. Santa Margarita is near South Coast schools Capistrano Valley, El Toro and Mission Viejo.

“There’s already been a precedent set that Santa Margarita would not be put in the South Coast League because of problems playing against teams in their area like El Toro, Capo Valley and Mission Viejo,” Century boys’ basketball Coach Greg Coombs said. “Those schools are fighting for the same kids.”

If Century and Mater Dei were placed in the same league, a similar situation would occur. Both schools are in Santa Ana.

The proposals alter all but three of the current leagues--the Century, Freeway and Orange would remain the same.

In each proposal, Kennedy would be removed from the Garden Grove League. It would leave the league with seven schools, all of which are in the the Garden Grove Unified School District. Kennedy and Westminster would move to the Empire League and Los Alamitos would move to the Sunset League. Aliso Viejo, scheduled to open in the fall, would join the Pacific Coast League.

The realignment committee will present two proposals for a vote on Feb. 24. A majority of the 60 schools will be needed to approve a final proposal that will be presented to the Southern Section executive committee at the section’s council meeting in March.

If the council approves the proposal, principals unhappy with their school’s placement can ask to move, but must find a school in another league willing to trade places.

If the proposal isn’t approved, it goes back to the realignment committee.
