GIRLS’ SOCCER ROUNDUP : Thompson’s Shutout Gives Canyon a Clean Sweep

Laura Flatauer scored in the first half and Tina Thompson made six saves in recording her 18th shutout as Canyon defeated Villa Park, 1-0, in a Century League girls’ soccer game Thursday at Villa Park.

Canyon (21-2, 10-0), which is ranked fifth in Orange County, enters the Southern Section playoffs as the league’s top-seeded team. Thompson’s shutout was her ninth in league play this season, during which she allowed only one goal to a Century League opponent.

In another Century League game:

Orange 5, Santa Ana Valley 0--Five players scored for host Orange (11-7-2, 5-5), which clinched third place and its first playoff berth in four seasons.

In the Empire League:

El Dorado 1, Loara 0--Shannon Myrand scored in the second half for host El Dorado (12-7-2, 6-2-2), which finished third and advances to the playoffs.

Los Alamitos 2, Katella 1--Laura Kuzminsky and Liz Willemse scored for league-champion Los Alamitos (15-3-2, 8-1-1). Lisa Dale scored for Katella (9-11-3, 1-8-1).

In the Freeway League:

Sunny Hills 4, Fullerton 1--Rhonda Partida scored two goals for visiting Sunny Hills, which won its third consecutive league championship. Jenny Cunningham and Jamie Gardner also scored for Sunny Hills (17-2-2, 9-0-1). Fullerton drops to 7-12-2, 4-6-0.

Troy 4, La Habra 1--Emily Keller, Gina Lobito, Kirsten Zeydel and Jennifer Stichter scored for Troy (12-8, 5-5).

In the Garden Grove League:

Garden Grove 4, Rancho Alamitos 0--Sara Des Palmes, Polly Chittenden, Brenda Zuhlke and Tina Hoalton scored for visiting Garden Grove (5-10-5, 2-5-3).

In the Orange League:

Anaheim 1, Western 1--Kelly Fernandes scored on a corner kick with 15 minutes remaining to help Anaheim (6-7-2, 4-4-2) salvage a tie. Brandy Lopez scored for Western.

Brea-Olinda 2, Magnolia 0--Erin Wright scored both goals for league-champion Brea-Olinda (13-6-3, 9-0-1).

In the Pacific Coast League:

Laguna Hills 7, Century 0--Goalkeeper Sarah Lang made one save to record her 16th shutout for Laguna Hills (16-7-1, 8-1-1), which finished second toEstancia in the league. Estancia won by forfeit over Laguna Beach, which didn’t have enough players.

Trabuco Hills 2, Costa Mesa 0--Tammi Daman, who scored on a penalty kick, and Erika Knoop, who scored on a header off an assist from Lindsay Rogers, sparked Trabuco Hills (14-9-1, 7-3-1) in the second half.

In the South Coast League:

El Toro 4, Mission Viejo 0--Yvonne Dalton scored, then Denise Kenyon scored three times for host El Toro (16-2-3, 6-1-2).

Mater Dei 6, San Clemente 0--Katie Ward and Amber Escobedo each scored two goals for Mater Dei (13-6-5, 4-2-3).
