PREP BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : Los Alamitos Gives Brooks 200th Victory

The Los Alamitos boys’ basketball team held off a fourth-quarter rally to beat Cypress, 69-65, and give Coach Steve Brooks his 200th victory at Los Alamitos Friday in an Empire League game.

Brooks, in his 12th season with the Griffins, has a 200-99 record.

Tim Lin had 13 points, Ryan Staniec 12 and Brent Hayward 11 for the host Griffins (19-6, 7-3 in league), who finished second in league.

Brett Boulton had 16 points, Bart Boulton 15 and Derek Mitchell 14 for Cypress (9-15, 2-8).

In other Empire League games:

Loara 63, Katella 58 (OT)--Scott Davis’ tip-in with no time remaining in regulation gave Loara (8-16, 3-7) an apparent 55-54 victory.

But while players and fans celebrated, Loara’s Floyd Talley grabbed the rim, and after a discussion with the coaches, the officials whistled a technical foul on Talley and ordered the teams back onto the court.

Katella’s Brian Carlson, who finished with 28 points, made one of the two technical foul shots to tie the score, 55-55, sending the game into overtime. Dean Faulkner scored six of his 17 points in the overtime for Loara (8-16, 3-7).

Esperanza 88, El Dorado 76--Rashaan Clark had 17 points and 10 rebounds and Marcus Jones had 15 points for visiting Esperanza (20-5, 10-0).

In the Orange League:

Magnolia 68, Brea-Olinda 58--Frank Henderson had 19 points and 13 rebounds and Aaron Williams and Brandon Hearvey each had 18 points for Magnolia (17-6, 9-1), which won its first league title since 1987.

Western 58, Anaheim 47--Frankie Floyd scored 24 points for visiting Western (16-8, 6-4), which finished in third place and qualified for the playoffs. Boun Malapha had 21 points and six rebounds for Anaheim (2-8 in league).

Valencia 51, Savanna 36--Mario Aguirre had 14 points and 11 rebounds for the Tigers. Teammate Kevin Deck had 11 points for Valencia (15-7, 8-2).

In the Olympic League:

Brethren Christian 70, Calvary Chapel 41--Reggie Davis scored 19 points and Scott Thomas 17 to lead Brethren Christian (18-7, 12-0) at Calvary Chapel.

In the Academy League:

St. Margaret’s 94, Southeast Lutheran 54--Forward Damian Raibon had 41 points and 15 rebounds to lead St. Margaret’s (15-6, 7-1), which shares first place with Liberty Christian.
